CHAPTER 26

After lunch at a restaurant, Officer Russell found himself back in the police station kitchen, pouring himself a hot cup of joe.

Their office assistant, Marybelle, made a new carafe and refilled it every few hours, because that’s what the police station needed—to be always caffeinated.

He already thought about going home and relaxing, because he’d been up all night the night before, and fatigue had caught up to him. He pictured himself lounging on the sofa in his living room and watching movies while sipping a beer. His best buddy, Ryan, was in town, and he was dying to see him. But Ryan said he’d be spending time with family the first couple of days.

The Officer could use some company, that was for sure. He didn’t have many friends anymore. They all dispersed and left the town for “bigger and better” things. His destiny was to stick around and follow his passion, which was to be a local cop. Shit, maybe he should have chosen another career, so he could travel some more and see the world. But he was anchored to the town, as his ill mother still lived here. He could never leave her behind.

Mary, his mother, suffered from Alzheimer’s and lived in the senior living community two towns over. Officer Russell thought she'd be better off being taken care of by people who knew the disease a lot better than him. Some days were quite rough for the officer. He’d go visit his mom, and she couldn’t recognize him. She’d stare at him at first, then ask what his name was, how they knew each other. Both annoyance and sadness would fill him. The woman who'd held him in her womb, two hearts so close, now estranged in many ways.

He couldn’t quite deal with his mother descending into a black hole, so he visited her less and less over time.

She surely wouldn’t care either way. Her disease had overtaken her life, and she was like a vegetable waiting to rot and perish.

Officer Russell texted Ryan to find out if he was free tonight. Any distraction would be good. They could hang out at his place or go to a local bar and catch up. Whatever worked.

A few minutes later, Ryan responded:

Sorry, but I can’t. Something urgent came up. I’ll be back in a few months.
